As part of the teaching assistant role, you will have various responsibilities that contribute to the overall support of students and teachers.

Some of these tasks include:

  • Reinforcing lessons presented by teachers through one-on-one sessions with students.
  • Assisting in maintaining discipline and teaching students proper behavior.
  • Supporting teachers with administrative tasks such as record-keeping and grade calculation.
  • Assisting in lesson preparation, including material organization and equipment setup.
  • Supervising students during class, breaks, lunch, and school trips.
  • Building positive relationships with children, teachers, parents, and carers.

While prior experience is not mandatory, the ability to build rapport with children and work well within a team is crucial. If you possess an outgoing personality and a genuine interest in working with children, this role could be a great fit for you.

Regarding the necessary checks and requirements, there are a few things to consider.

  • Before starting work as a teaching assistant in the UK, you must provide a National Police Check.
  • Additionally, you will need to obtain a DBS check, which shows your criminal history and suitability for working with children in the UK.
  • The DBS check can be initiated once you arrive in the UK and usually takes 1-2 weeks to process.
Grooming policy:
  • Please keep in mind the importance of dressing smartly and professionally while working as a teaching assistant.
  • Although there is no set uniform, practical and presentable attire is expected. It is important to remove facial piercings and cover visible tattoos during work hours.
  • Well-groomed hair and facial hair are also required, and flip-flops, faded clothing, and ripped attire should be avoided.

As for working hours, teaching assistants typically follow school hours from Monday to Friday, enjoying school holidays off. Depending on your preference, you can opt for a fixed-term role or a supply contract that offers more flexibility for travel and availability. The rates of pay for teaching assistants in London vary based on hours worked and specific roles.

Typically, you can expect to earn between £75-£85 per day.
